What is Lipozene
Lipozene is a dietary supplement sold for weight loss by the Obesity Research Institute LLC. It comes in a sleek package making it look like a drug which is made worse by the exaggerated marketing claims labeling it as an exclusive formula. In reality, Lipozene is a fiber supplement. Each capsule of Lipozene contains 750mg of glucomannan, an excellent fiber source extracted as a soluble solution from the tuber root of the elephant yam. It is capable of absorbing up to 50 times of its weight in water, making it one of the most vicious fibers ever known to man.
There are no other fancy ingredients contained in the Lipozene supplement. The other ingredients are basically fillers and other capsule ingredients plus artificial dyes.
How does glucomannan work?
The higher the viscosity of this soluble fiber, the more it absorbs water and expands in the gastrointestinal tract. The vicious gel-like mass formed inside the stomach can increase satiety significantly by delaying emptying and slowing down the gastrointestinal transit time. Satiety is simply the sensation of fullness as a consequence of eating that inhibits the resumption of eating. This is the mechanism that glucomannan utilizes to aid in weight loss.
The water absorption properties of glucomannan also give it numerous health benefits, including weight loss, relieving constipation and lowering cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels.
Lipozene is hence, a commercial product which is mainly composed of glucomannan product, claimed to have all these health benefits. It also contains small amounts of gelatin, magnesium silicate, as well as stearic acid. Please note that these products have nothing to do with weight loss; instead, they are meant to add bulk and keep the product from getting lumpy.
Benefits of Lipozene for weight loss
According to observational studies, people who consume more fiber tend to lose weight gradually. The reason why this happens is not clear, but there are a number of ways which soluble fiber can help you to lose weight. These include;
- Keeping you full
as we have seen above, the soluble fiber absorbs water and keeps you full by expanding your stomach. This also reduces the rate at which food leaves your stomach, making you fuller for longer.
- Low-calorie count
The capsules are low in calories. They will, therefore, work to keep you full while adding no extra calories in your system
Reduces overall dietary calories: The product may also minimize the absorption of other nutrients such as fats and proteins, meaning that you get very little calories from the food you eat.
Enhances the health of your gut: the product may influence your weight, although indirectly, through the encouragement of good bacteria in your gut. This makes you less prone to gaining weight.
Other types of soluble fibers offer similar benefits as glucomannan, but the superior absorbent characteristic of glucomannan causes it to form an extra thick gel, making it more efficient in making you feel fuller.
Does the product really work?
Various studies have been carried out to try and investigate the real effect of glucomannan and the other active ingredients contained in Lipozene. Almost all trials post similar results.
Within one week, people who took the fiber supplement lost around 3.7 pounds each. The studies further show that glucomannan can be used to effectively reduce weight in people suffering from obesity within a short time. Other studies have been conducted showing that although the fiber solution is speedy and effective, its effects wear off as fast as they come. The results would be better if they were combined with a calorie controlled diet. Meaning that if you want the results to last, you should probably combine intake of the supplement with a disciplined diet and regular exercises.
Other health benefits of Lipozene
Other benefits are linked with this soluble fiber. Therefore, apart from weight loss, you will also realize several other health benefits that include:
Reduced constipation; the recommended dosage of 1gram three time per day can be used as a solution for constipation problems in adults
Lowering the risks of other diseases: The substance has qualities that are capable of lowering blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood fats. These are the major risk factors for conditions such as heart diseases and diabetes.
Improving gut health: glucomannan also has some prebiotic features that feed and promotes healthy bacteria in the gut, which in turn produce some beneficial short-chain fatty acids that will lower the risk of some diseases.
According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, an adult is supposed to take 2 capsules of Lipozene 30 minutes before a meal with 230ml of water. This can be repeated up to three times a day, 30 minutes before a meal. The minimum number of capsules recommended per day is 6 capsules. This is the same as taking 1.5grams of the substance 3 times in a day or 4.5 grams per day. This slightly exceeds the amount required for effective weight loss, which is 2 to 4 grams per day. The timing here is what determines how the supplements will work because the substance is not effective unless it is taken right before a meal.
Lipozene is usually well treated by the body. However, some people have reported experiencing nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea. Always consult your doctor before taking Lipozene alongside any other medication, especially diabetes medication such as sulfonylureas. This is because such medication limits the effectiveness of the substance or block its absorption. This can, however, be avoided by taking your medication at least four hours after the supplement. You should also note that the benefits of glucomannan and Lipozene are similar. This means that you can always go for an unbranded glucomannan product, and it will still have the same effect as Lipozene.
There are a lot of supplement companies that sell glucomannan and Lipozene is not special in any way. You can still get good quality glucomannan either alone or combine with other substances from a higher profile brand at a much lower cost. Like stated above, the recommended dosage of the substance is 1500 mg before meals.
Each bottle of Lipozene contains 15 doses (30 capsules). Two of these bottles go for $29.95 on Amazon, making it one dollar for each capsule. The NOW supplement company, on the other hand, sells the bottles containing 180 capsules each at $11.36. With each capsule containing 575mg with a serving size of three capsules. This makes each dose 17325mg. Going with this math, each dose sells at $0.19. That’s a fifth of the cost on Amazon for a higher dosage per serving, from a higher profile company that is more transparent and trustworthy.
This company also sell glucomannan in the form of loose powder that you can simply mix with a liquid and drink, saving you even more money and allowing you to customize the dosage any way you want.
Another company that sells Lipozene is Nature’s way, which is of even higher profile that is equally transparent and trustworthy, and they sell glucomannan capsules as well. Each bottle of Lipozene from this company contains 180 capsules for 665mg. The recommended dosage indicated on the bottle is three capsules before every meal, three times a day, making it 1995mg dosage each day, this is the highest dosage yet and is the most commonly used in clinical research and studies. Amazon sells this bottle at $14.74, $0.25 per dose.
Based on these prices, it is obvious that the cost of Lipozene is quite high compared to other products with the same ingredients.
According to scientific findings, the glucomannan in Lipozene could help you reach your ideal weight. If you are interested in trying out glucomannan as a weight loss supplement, you can always get Lipozene or one of the cheaper alternatives that are readily available in the market. Most of these supplements are readily available on Amazon with the same benefits as Lipozene. However, you should note that no one weight loss supplement guarantees 100% results. You will still have to include strict diets and regular exercises for any dietary supplement to be effective.
Looking at the published claims about the effects of glucomannan, I can find no proof to back up the claims that using the product will result in the user losing 78% of each pound constituting to their body fat. The Lipozene website making these claims does not provide any reference to either clinical researches or any studies whatsoever.
Reading various published literature to determine the safety of Lipozene is an excellent way to access the possible effects of the product, as long as whatever is labeled on the bottle is exactly what is contained in the capsules. However, given the recent rampant adulteration problems with weight loss supplements, there could be a slight possibility that your preferred method of dietary supplements could be contaminated with other botanical or synthetic drugs.
